Account takeover via interrupted challenge-response handshake
Published Feb 13, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Authentication bypass in Atheme IRC Services before 7.2.12 allows remote attackers to take over accounts through an interrupted SASL login. The SASL service caches the requested authorization identity and treats a still-open session as successful when registration ends before the challenge completes. Exploitation requires InspIRCd 3.x or 4.x and an enabled challenge-response SASL module; the attacker can impersonate a victim, add credentials, and reconnect as that account.
