Root privilege escalation via unchecked socket path
Published Aug 16, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Privilege escalation in Eternal Terminal before 6.2.0 allows remote authenticated users to gain root access through a crafted packet. PortForwardHandler::createSource accepts an attacker-chosen named socket, while PipeSocketHandler::listen copies its path without bounds checking and applies unlink, bind, chmod, and chown without validating the target. SSH access and a successful file-operation race are required; exploitation can change arbitrary file ownership and permissions, including those of /etc/passwd.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
