CVE-2022-24840Public exploitNetwork attack vector

S3 file disclosure and deletion via unsigned paths

Published Jun 6, 2022 · Updated Apr 22, 2025

Path traversal in codingjoe django-s3file before 5.5.1 allows remote attackers to read or delete S3 files via crafted form data. S3FileMiddleware trusts attacker-supplied s3file field names and object paths, opens those paths from storage, and injects the resulting files into request.FILES without verifying that the path belongs to the signed upload location. Any reachable Django view can carry the injected files; authentication on every file-handling view narrows exposure, while AWS_LOCATION confines traversal to that prefix.
