Arbitrary code execution via kubeconfig exec commands
Published May 6, 2022 · Updated Apr 23, 2025
Code injection in Flux2 before 0.29.0 allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code through a malicious kubeconfig. The controllers pass kubeconfig exec credential-plugin commands to the Kubernetes client with command execution enabled by default. An attacker must be able to change a referenced Flux source or create or modify a Kustomization, HelmRelease, and its Secret; execution occurs in the controller container and can inherit its service-account permissions.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=flux2 < v0.29.0 >= v0.1.0
- Affected versionversion=helm-controller < v0.23.0 >= v0.1.0
- Affected versionversion=kustomize-controller < v0.19.0 >= v0.2.0
