Home-directory disclosure via unescaped Bash tilde expansion
Published Mar 3, 2022 · Updated Apr 22, 2025
Information disclosure in Eric Cornelissen Shescape 1.4.0 through 1.5.0 allows local users to reveal the home directory via Bash. With interpolation enabled, escape and escapeAll leave a tilde unescaped after an equals sign or within a colon-delimited assignment value, so Bash expands it to the current user's home path. Reachability requires a consuming application to process attacker-controlled input through the affected API and use the result in Bash; Dash and Zsh are unaffected, and downstream directory traversal depends on how the expanded path is used.
