Remote code execution via EMF pointer dereference
Published Mar 9, 2022 · Updated Jul 8, 2025
Microsoft Office Visio in affected Office 2019, LTSC 2021, and Microsoft 365 Apps allows remote attackers to execute code via a malicious file. The EMF parser processes EMR_COMMENT_EMFPLUS records without validating a user-supplied value before dereferencing it as a pointer. Exploitation requires a user to open the crafted Visio document or visit a malicious page, after which code runs with the current process rights.
