Privilege escalation via unchecked kernel address read
Published Apr 15, 2022 · Updated Dec 16, 2025
Elevation of privilege in Microsoft Windows AFD.sys allows local users with low privileges to gain kernel-level privileges via a crafted IOCTL. AfdTliIoControl reuses a user-supplied address without repeating the user-range check and passes that address to memcpy for a kernel pool copy. Exploitation requires prior local low-privilege access; the public proof demonstrates a crash, while Microsoft classifies the flaw as privilege escalation.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
