Improper input validation in GitLab allows remote authenticated users to import projects containing deceptive 40-hexadecimal branch names. The git-protocol import path omits the prohibited-branch checks applied to normal pushes, allowing a branch name to resemble a SHA-1 commit ID. Exploitation requires project-import permission and a victim that treats the ambiguous identifier as a pinned commit, enabling attacker-controlled branch content to replace expected code.
