Remote code execution via unchecked hostname copy
Published Mar 19, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
FromSoftware Dark Souls III through 2022-03-19 allows remote attackers to execute code via a buffer overflow in NRSessionSearchResult. The parser copies a null-terminated host persona name from matchmaking data into a fixed-size stack buffer without checking its length, allowing corruption of a nearby stream object's virtual-table pointer. The game client must be online and receive a crafted matchmaking push message, but active multiplayer participation and user interaction are not required.
