Stored script execution via unsanitized conversation titles
Published Jun 15, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Stored XSS in Messenger/messenger_ajax.php in Vanderbilt REDCap 12.0.11 allows remote authenticated users to execute scripts. The endpoint accepts attacker-controlled new_title content while an existing conversation is edited and stores it without neutralizing executable markup before rendering the title. Any authenticated user can plant the payload, but it executes only when a conversation participant displays the Messenger sidebar, exposing that participant's browser context to script actions.
