SMM code execution via undersized range validation
Published Mar 11, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Memory corruption in HP PC BIOS before 02.07.10 allows local users with kernel privileges to execute code in System Management Mode. The child SW SMI handler validates only a caller-supplied one-byte range before sub_1AB8 writes farther through the nested buffer pointer into SMRAM. Kernel-level execution is required; successful exploitation can redirect SMM execution and persist firmware code beyond an operating-system reinstall.
