CVE-2022-23927Public exploit

SMM code execution via unchecked communication buffer

Published Mar 11, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Memory corruption in HP PC BIOS before 02.07.10 allows local users with administrative privileges to execute code in SMM. The child software SMI handler accepts a zero-length communication buffer without confirming that the buffer lies outside SMRAM, then writes a predictable status value through an attacker-controlled pointer. Kernel-level access is required; successful corruption can redirect S3-resume execution and permit persistent firmware implants beyond operating-system reinstallations.
