CVE-2022-23531

Arbitrary file write via unsafe tar extraction

Published Dec 16, 2022 · Updated Apr 17, 2025

Relative path traversal in Datadog GuardDog before 0.1.5 allows context-dependent attackers to write arbitrary files via a crafted archive. The local package scanner passes .tar.gz member paths directly to tarfile.TarFile.extractall without ensuring that resolved paths remain inside its temporary directory. Exploitation requires an operator to scan the attacker's local package; archive members can then overwrite files writable by the GuardDog process.
