Command execution via unescaped Goto Anything results
Published Feb 8, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Code injection in Joplin before 2.7.1 allows remote attackers to execute system commands through malicious content in search results. The Goto Anything result renderer's stripHtml routine decoded note-derived HTML but left literal less-than characters intact, allowing an image error handler to invoke Electron's Node.js require function. A victim must receive attacker-controlled note content and search for nearby text; successful exploitation runs commands with the desktop application's privileges.
