CVE-2022-2319

Root code execution via unchecked XKB geometry counts

Published Sep 1, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

An out-of-bounds write in X.Org Server 21.1 allows local users to execute code as root through a crafted XKB geometry request. ProcXkbSetGeometry trusts claimed section, row, and key counts in a short request, then processes beyond the supplied request buffer. Exploitation requires low-privileged code execution and a privileged X server; an SSH X-forwarding session also exposes a remote code-execution path.
