Local privilege escalation via FileStore path race
Published Jan 27, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
TOCTOU race in Apache Tomcat allows local users to perform actions with the privileges of the Tomcat process account through FileStore. FileStore.file canonicalizes a session path to validate containment, but vulnerable builds return the original noncanonical File, allowing the checked path to differ from the used path. Exploitation requires local filesystem access and FileStore session persistence; affected releases are 8.5.55 through 8.5.73, 9.0.35 through 9.0.56, 10.0.0-M5 through 10.0.14, and 10.1.0-M1 through 10.1.0-M8.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
