CVE-2022-23087Public exploit

Guest-to-host code execution via checksum offset overwrite

Published Feb 15, 2024 · Updated Mar 27, 2025

Out-of-bounds write in FreeBSD bhyve allows guest OS users to execute code in the host context through crafted e1000 transmissions. The e82545_transmit function trusts a guest-controlled UDP checksum offset and reads and writes two checksum bytes beyond an on-stack header buffer. Exploitation requires control of a bhyve guest configured with the e82545 device; Capsicum confines the resulting host-process execution when enabled.
