Guest memory access via grant revocation race
Published Mar 10, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Race condition in Linux kernel scsifront allows attackers controlling a Xen PV backend to read and write guest memory. The driver checks whether a grant is in use, then assumes revocation will succeed even if the backend maps the page between those operations. The issue requires a Linux guest using a potentially malicious PV backend; a winning race leaves that backend able to access the guest page after I/O ends.
