Application crash via stale editor positions
Published Dec 22, 2022 · Updated Apr 16, 2025
Out-of-bounds access in Mozilla Firefox before 96, Firefox ESR before 91.5, and Thunderbird before 91.5 allows remote attackers to crash applications. In the DOM editor, whitespace replacement fails to update split and insertion positions, leaving nsTextFragment::CharAt to read through an invalid offset. A user must open attacker-controlled content that invokes text-editing operations; ordinary Thunderbird message reading disables scripting, limiting exposure there to browser-like contexts.
