CVE-2022-22739Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Program launch via unthrottled cross-tab protocol dialogs

Published Dec 22, 2022 · Updated Apr 16, 2025

Mozilla Firefox before 96, Firefox ESR before 91.5, and Thunderbird before 91.5 allow remote attackers to induce program launches. An iframe-triggered external protocol passes no embedder to ContentDispatchChooser, causing the prompt to attach to the selected tab without throttling or an activation check. A malicious page must remain open and a user must accept the recurring dialog; the resulting external program runs with the protocol URL supplied by the page.
