Membership escalation via unchecked profile parameter
Published Aug 1, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Improper privilege management in Simple Membership before 4.1.3 allows remote authenticated users to gain a higher plugin membership level. The front-end profile-edit handler accepted membership_level from submitted form data and wrote it to the member record instead of excluding it. A logged-in plugin member with a valid profile nonce can alter access to plugin-protected content, but the flaw does not change the WordPress role.
