Remote daemon crash via Forwarded offset overwrite
Published Jan 6, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Stack-based buffer overflow in lighttpd 1.4.46 through 1.4.63 allows remote attackers to crash the daemon via a Forwarded header. The mod_extforward_Forwarded parser lets its offsets index reach the array length, then pre-increments it and writes a four-byte -1 past the stack buffer. Reachability requires mod_extforward to trust a proxy and parse Forwarded headers; adverse behavior was observed on 32-bit canary-enabled builds, while standard optimized 64-bit builds did not exhibit it.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

CVSS describes severity. EPSS estimates exploitation probability.
Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
Public exploit references
No public exploit references are available in this record.
Labels summarize the accepted research assessment. They do not indicate a test against your environment.
