Privilege escalation via unchecked installer path
Published Mar 18, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Privilege escalation in SoftwareUpdate in Apple iOS and iPadOS before 15.4 and macOS before 12.3 allows local users to gain elevated privileges. On macOS, the prepareInstallAssistantWithPath API in suhelperd omits the isClientPort authorization check before passing an attacker-controlled installer path to softwareupdated, which loads OSInstallerSetup.framework from that path. The unchecked XPC request lets a locally running application execute code through the privileged update service; Apple has not disclosed whether the same locus underlies the mobile-platform impact.
