Kernel code execution via AVEVideoEncoder bounds failure
Published Mar 18, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Out-of-bounds write in Apple iOS, iPadOS, and tvOS before 15.4 allows local users to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. The AVEVideoEncoder component writes beyond a buffer because its bounds checks fail to reject an out-of-range operation; Apple has not published the affected function or input. Execution requires a locally run application, and successful exploitation escapes application privileges to execute code in the kernel.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
