Local denial of service via unterminated menu item
Published Jun 30, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Out-of-bounds read in Vim before 9.0 allows local users to crash the editor via a crafted menu item containing only a modifier. The str2special parser advanced beyond the menu-item buffer when no character followed the modifier because it did not stop at the terminating NUL byte. Exploitation requires a user to open or source crafted Vim menu input, and the documented consequence is an editor crash rather than a demonstrated remote compromise.
