PFE restart via content-filtered transit traffic
Published Oct 18, 2022 · Updated May 9, 2025
NULL pointer dereference in Junos OS 21.4 and 22.1 on SRX Series allows remote attackers to crash and restart the PFE. Juniper identifies the locus as packet processing with UTM Enhanced Content Filtering, but does not disclose the traffic field or dereference path. The SRX must have Enhanced Content Filtering enabled and process specific transit traffic; exploitation interrupts forwarding while the PFE restarts.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=21.4 <21.4R1-S2, 21.4R2
- Affected versionversion=22.1 <22.1R1-S1, 22.1R2
