Secret disclosure via RC4 wrapping fallback
Published Jan 11, 2022 · Updated Jan 2, 2025
Security feature bypass in Microsoft Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 allows remote attackers to expose DPAPI-protected secrets. A client falls back to BACKUPKEY_BACKUP_GUID server-side wrapping with RC4 when retrieval of the domain controller public key fails. Exploitation requires a domain-joined client, a forced key-retrieval failure, and user interaction; the reported consequence is secret disclosure without data alteration or service interruption.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
