Application hang via malformed XML newline normalization
Published Jan 19, 2022 · Updated May 27, 2026
Infinite loop in JAXP in Oracle Java SE 7u321, 8u311, 11.0.13, and 17.0.1 allows remote attackers to hang XML-processing applications. XMLEntityScanner and XML11EntityScanner mishandle and normalize newlines in crafted XML entities, leaving parsing in an infinite loop. Exposure requires untrusted XML to reach JAXP through sandboxed code or a component API, and the resulting CPU loop hangs the processing application.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
