Editor crash via spell-suggestion index underflow
Published Jun 19, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Out-of-bounds read in Vim before 8.2.5123 allows context-dependent attackers to crash the editor through crafted text and spell suggestions. In src/spellsuggest.c, suggest_trie_walk() decrements ts_fidx when it is already zero while handling an inserted trail byte, causing a subsequent lookup to use a negative index. Exploitation requires a user to process attacker-controlled text with spell checking and invoke the suggestion operation; the demonstrated consequence is a process crash.
