Serialization filtering in Oracle Java SE 7u321, 8u311, 11.0.13, and 17.0.1 allows remote attackers to modify accessible data. ObjectInputStream fails to apply the configured deserialization filter to locally available superclasses omitted from a crafted stream, allowing restricted classes through. Exploitation requires untrusted code in a sandboxed Java client or an application, such as a web service, that passes attacker-controlled data to Serialization APIs.
