CVE-2022-2124Public exploit

Process-memory over-read via stale Visual-selection boundary

Published Jun 19, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Buffer over-read in Vim before 8.2.5120 allows context-dependent attackers to read process memory through a crafted text file. The current_quote() routine scans toward a stale Visual-selection endpoint after the selected line changes, but fails to stop when it reaches the line's NUL terminator. A victim must open the file and trigger quote text-object processing; observed outcomes include a Vim hang, while the over-read can expose adjacent process memory.
