CVE-2022-20943Network attack vector

Policy bypass and reload via SMB2 resource exhaustion

Published Nov 10, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Resource exhaustion in Cisco Cyber Vision and Firepower Threat Defense allows remote attackers to reload Snort through SMB2 traffic. The Snort 3 SMB2 processor mishandles system resources while processing a high rate of certain SMB2 packets, exhausting resources until its process reloads. Existing flows then bypass inspection when the default preserve-connection setting is enabled, while new flows are dropped and service is interrupted.
