Root command execution via improper process restart checks
Published Sep 30, 2022 · Updated Nov 1, 2024
Privilege escalation in Cisco IOS XE Embedded Wireless Controllers allows local users to execute commands as root through the CLI. The self-healing functionality performs improper checks while restarting certain system processes, allowing restricted-shell commands to reach the underlying access-point operating system. Exploitation requires local CLI access with valid privilege level 15 wireless-controller credentials; successful execution escapes the restricted controller shell.
