Secret disclosure via detailed schema-error logging
Published Apr 19, 2023 · Updated Feb 5, 2025
Sensitive-data exposure in Canonical cloud-init before 23.0 allows local users to read secrets from world-readable logs after schema failures. During boot-time validation, validate_cloudconfig_schema writes detailed errors containing invalid user-data values, including password hashes, to /var/log/cloud-init.log. Low-privileged local access to the log is required; exposure is limited to secrets present in schema-invalid user data.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
