Root code execution via insecure temporary file
Published Feb 10, 2022 · Updated Nov 6, 2024
Local privilege escalation in Cisco Small Business RV Series Router Firmware allows local users to execute arbitrary code as root. The utility-ping-request script creates a temporary file with insecure permissions, allowing low-privileged code to alter it before privileged use. Exploitation requires prior low-privileged code execution on the router and grants root-level command execution.
