Local privilege escalation via thermal stats bounds
Published Dec 16, 2022 · Updated Apr 21, 2025
An out-of-bounds write in Google Pixel Thermal Control Driver for Android kernel allows local users with System execution privileges to escalate privileges. The thermal_cooling_device_stats_update function in thermal_sysfs.c performs the write when thermal statistics input is improperly validated. Exploitation requires local System-level execution without user interaction and can provide kernel privilege escalation with confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact.
