Local privilege escalation via oversized packet address copy

Out-of-bounds access in packet_recvmsg in Linux Kernel before 5.17 allows local users to escalate privileges through an AF_PACKET socket. With PACKET_COPY_THRESH and mmap active, tpacket_rcv queues a copied packet whose address metadata contains garbage, and packet_recvmsg trusts that metadata as the copy length. Exploitation requires access to create and operate the packet socket; the oversized copy can overwrite the kernel stack without user interaction.
