CVE-2022-2031Network attack vector

Privilege escalation via Kerberos ticket confusion

Published Aug 25, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Authentication bypass in affected Samba releases allows remote authenticated users to obtain broader Kerberos tickets through kpasswd requests. Kpasswd principal canonicalization can yield TGTs, while the KDC can also accept kpasswd tickets as TGTs because the services share keys. Exploitation requires an AD user restricted by an expired password and grants access to other forest services or control through password changes.
