Physical privilege escalation via Gboard sandbox escape
Published Jun 15, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Privilege escalation in Gboard on Android 10, 11, 12, and 12L allows physically proximate attackers to bypass factory reset protection. Gboard escapes its application sandbox and bypasses the factory-reset ownership barrier, but Google has not published the faulty operation or triggering input. Physical possession of a reset device is required; no prior execution privileges or user interaction are needed, and the bypass permits access beyond the reset lock.
