Local privilege escalation via ion race
Published May 3, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Use-after-free in MediaTek ion on Android 9.0 through 12.0 allows local users to escalate privileges via a race condition. A time-of-check/time-of-use race in the ion component permits memory to be freed between validation and use, creating a dangling reference. Exploitation requires local access but no additional execution privileges or user interaction, and the resulting impact is privilege elevation.
