CVE-2022-1975

Kernel crash via sleeping NFC timeout allocation

Published Aug 31, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Denial of service in Linux Kernel 5.18-rc6 allows local users to crash the kernel by simulating an NFC device from user space. The fw_dnld_timeout timer handler calls nfc_genl_fw_download_done, which allocates and multicasts a netlink message with GFP_KERNEL even though timer context cannot sleep. Low-privileged local access and a simulated NFC device are required, and successful exploitation causes a kernel panic without reported confidentiality or integrity impact.
