Firmware code execution via SystemLoadDefaultDxe heap overflow
Published Jan 23, 2023 · Updated Apr 3, 2025
Heap-based buffer overflow in Lenovo Notebook BIOS allows local users with high privileges to execute arbitrary code in firmware. The SystemLoadDefaultDxe driver writes beyond a heap buffer, although Lenovo has not disclosed the input or copy operation that triggers the overwrite. Exploitation requires existing high local privileges and can compromise firmware-level code execution on an affected notebook.
