Editor crash via escaped trailing backslash
Published May 10, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Buffer over-read in Vim before 8.2.4925 allows local users to crash the editor or alter process memory via crafted text. The find_next_quote function in src/textobject.c increments its column after an escaped trailing backslash without checking for the line-ending NUL. Exploitation requires local access and text that reaches quote text-object parsing; a process crash is the most directly grounded consequence.
