Playbook-admin privilege escalation via unchecked membership changes
Published May 3, 2022 · Updated Dec 6, 2024
Improper access control in Mattermost Playbooks 1.25 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to gain playbook-admin privileges. The membership-update authorization logic accepts a member-requested privilege change without enforcing the administrator-only role restriction. A playbook membership and user interaction are required; successful exploitation permits admin-restricted playbook actions, with no reported service interruption.
