CVE-2022-1292Network attack vector

Command execution via shell-interpreted certificate filenames

Published May 3, 2022 · Updated Dec 30, 2025

OS command injection in OpenSSL c_rehash 1.0.2 through 1.0.2zd, 1.1.1 through 1.1.1n, and 3.0.0 through 3.0.2 allows command execution. The script embeds certificate and CRL filenames in backtick shell commands with incomplete quote escaping instead of passing arguments directly to the OpenSSL process. Attackers must place a crafted filename in a directory processed by c_rehash; manual or operating-system-triggered execution runs the injected command with the script's privileges.
