CVE-2022-1271Network attack vector

Arbitrary file write via newline filename parsing

Published Aug 31, 2022 · Updated Jun 9, 2025

Arbitrary file write in GNU gzip zgrep before 1.12 allows remote authenticated users to overwrite files via crafted multiline filenames. zgrep insufficiently validates filenames containing two or more newline characters, allowing embedded content and target paths to be interpreted as file operations. The attacker must cause zgrep to process a chosen filename; successful exploitation overwrites attacker-selected files, with possible broader system impact depending on writable paths.
