Editor crash via freed regex buffer line
Published Mar 30, 2022 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Use-after-free in Vim before 8.2.4646 allows context-dependent attackers to crash the editor by inducing a crafted substitution. The old backtracking regular-expression engine calls getmark_buf during substitution, which can free the current buffer line, then reuses stale rex.line and rex.input pointers. Exploitation requires a user to open attacker-controlled content; published evidence establishes a crash and memory corruption, not reliable code execution.
