CVE-2022-1043Public exploit

Local root escalation via wrapped personality allocation

Published Aug 29, 2022 · Updated Aug 2, 2024

Use-after-free in Linux kernel 5.12-rc3 through 5.14-rc6 allows local users to gain root privileges through io_uring registration. The io_register_personality function treats a successful xa_alloc_cyclic wrap as an error and releases live credentials, leaving a dangling credential pointer. A local account can force the ID wrap and reclaim the freed credential through a privileged process; success grants root, while cleanup can panic the kernel.
