CVE-2022-1015

Local privilege escalation via register validation

Published Apr 29, 2022 · Updated Aug 2, 2024

Out-of-bounds write in the Linux kernel netfilter subsystem allows local users to execute arbitrary code via crafted nftables rules. The nft_validate_register_store and nft_validate_register_load functions validate user-controlled register numbers without the required bounds checks, enabling reads and writes relative to kernel stack data. Exploitation requires an unprivileged user with user and network namespace access; successful exploitation can compromise kernel integrity and availability.
