Authenticated data access via retained expired-password session
Published Mar 23, 2022 · Updated Nov 3, 2025
Improper authentication in 389 Directory Server 1.4 allows remote authenticated users to access LDAP data with an expired password. The need_new_pw path returns LDAP error 49 after password expiry but leaves the connection's bind credentials intact instead of clearing them. After all grace logins are exhausted, the rejected bind remains authenticated and retains the account's normal read or write permissions.
